2017 MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting

The 2017 Annual Meeting of MASCC/ISOO will take place in Washington, DC, USA, from June 22 to 24. Scientific Meeting Chair Rachel Gibson has announced the theme of the meeting as “Sharing Successes in Supportive Care in Cancer.” Topics will include new models of coordinated care, strategies for managing targeted therapies, the integration of oncology and dermatology, and financial toxicity. New e-poster sessions will be mentored by leading world experts, many based at the National Cancer Institute or other US research centers.

Washington, DC, the US capital, is a compact city defined by imposing neoclassical monuments, museums, and performing arts venues. As the heart of US government and finance, it is home to the White House, the Federal Reserve, and the National Archives Building, which houses the US Declaration of Independence. Museums and other points of interest include the National Gallery of Art, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, the Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial.

The 2017 Annual Meeting will feature five Workshops, each of which represents a collaborative effort between two or more MASCC Study Groups. All workshops will be held on Thursday morning, June 22, before the meeting’s Opening Ceremonies.

A special pre-conference patient seminar, Flavor Perception in People Affected by Cancer, will be held from 2:00 to 5:45 pm on June 21st at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, 2500 Calvert St. NW, Washington, DC. The program, which focuses on taste problems caused by cancer treatment, will provide a chance to hear from experts in the fields of taste, smell, flavor creation, nutrition, and sensory science. Participants will learn how cancer and its treatments affect smell and taste. There will be an opportunity to discuss smell and taste problems and to join a workshop on improving the sense of smell. The seminar is open to patients only, with the option of bringing one friend or family member. Click here to register.

2016 MASCC/ISOO Meeting Highlights

MASCC’S 25th Anniversary: Past, Present, and Future

The 2016 MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting took place in Adelaide, Australia, June 23-25. Meeting Chairs Dorothy Keefe and Ian Olver warmly welcomed attendees to Adelaide and to the conference, which celebrated MASCC’s 25th Anniversary and ISOO’s 30th. The meeting featured an exciting program of presentations, workshops, and discussions on treatments and techniques for minimizing treatment-induced side effects, as well as on the psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of cancer diagnosis and treatment.

This year, 1075 delegates, representing 50 countries, attended the meeting, with a sizable turnout from Australia and Asia. The meeting featured six pre-conference Study Group workshops, a pre-conference Cancer Nurse Practitioner Workshop, and plenary sessions on Survivorship, Gastrointestinal Toxicity, and the Future of Supportive Care, a Patient Seminar, and a parallel paper session for each MASCC Study Group. Innovations at this year’s meeting included e-posters and a focus on social media. The meeting provided numerous opportunities to exchange information and initiatives with colleagues from around the world and featured a New Member Reception, where MASCC officers and conference faculty welcomed new members to MASCC.

Numerous attendees were recognized with awards and honors, such as the Distinguished Service Award, Young Investigator Awards, an Outstanding Young Investigator Award, Travel Scholarships, and the Cynthia Rittenberg Travel Scholarship.
