The purpose of this Society is to promote scientific exchange among health care professionals in oncology, cytotoxic therapy and its impact on the oral environment.
The Society provides a multidisciplinary forum for scientists and clinicians to focus on:
- Concepts associated with oral consequences of antineoplastic therapy
- Novel strategies germane to cancer research
- Educational pursuits related to cancer and cancer therapy oral morbidity
- Scientific diversity through collaboration
ISOO was created in the late 1980s to address management of complications arising in oral and maxillofacial tissues secondary to cancer and its treatment.
This type of cancer therapy has become increasing aggressive over time. As a result, oral and head and neck complications have increased in frequency, intensity and duration.
Throughout its history, ISOO has remained committed to interfacing contemporary basic and clinical research advances into effective patient care. ISOO and MASCC officially joined forces in March 1998, strategically broadening the forum for advancing the science of head and neck complications in cancer patients. One of the main goals of MASCC is to study and agree on standardized treatment and protocols in the management of cancer patients. This approach is one of the main goals of ISOO when considering oral-dental issues. The alliance between the two organizations has resulted in highly effective integration of science in a multi-professional oncology setting.
Membership is open to health care professionals licensed to practice in their discipline. This includes, but is not limited to, dentists, physicians, registered dental hygienists, registered nurses and other credentialed providers.
