Dear Members of MASCC Patient and Professional Education Study Group,
We would like to give you an update about Study Group activities and news about MASCC 2008 Meeting.
We are happy to share that our SG project “International survey on role of the nurse in patient education and follow-up of people receiving oral chemotherapy treatment” completed and published in MASCC Journal. The findings of this survey, 1115 nurses from 15 countries, provided the rationale for developing a clinical teaching tool (CTT) that offers consistent and comprehensive teaching of patients receiving oral cancer agents. This tool has been developed in August by 6 nurse expert. All co-investigators were asked to review and received their feedback. Now we are planning to arrange workshop before MASCC Meeting to disseminate this tool. On behalf of our group, I would like to thank our members who were involved to this project, for their great effort and success.
MASCC 2008, which will be held on June 26- 28, 2008 at the Hilton Americas in Houston, Texas, USA is rapidly approaching. We would like to remind and encourage you to submit abstract of your work. The deadline is February 15, 2008. If there is sufficient number of abstract submitted, we may have a place to present in the program as study group.
We also need your help to review abstract, so please let us know if you are available and willing to be a reviewer on behalf of our SG.

Goals:
The goal of the patient education study section is to ensure patient education is an integral part of all aspects of supportive cancer care. A needs assessment survey of MASCC members has provided useful information for future planning. Outcomes of the recent meeting of the study section include the development and pilot of a patient guide outlining questions they may wish to ask about their disease and treatment, collaboration with the mucositis study section on developing a patient education brochure, and testing its effectiveness in multi-languages and cultural settings. Also discussed was the need to evaluate the readability of existing patient education materials and how best to respond to members who have indicated a lack of patient education materials in their countries/languages.
