Mission:
With the evolving successes cancer diagnosis and treatment during the past 70plus years, the importance of optimizing patient outcomes in terms of quality of survivorship is increasingly appreciated. The MASCC Rehabilitation/Survivorship Study Group members, as of June, 2006, represents 54 clinicians and researchers from 19 countries who are dedicated to the following principles:
- Cancer rehabilitation is a process that assists the individual with a cancer diagnosis to obtain optimal physical, social, psychological and vocational functioning within the limits created by the disease and its treatment.
- An imperative in accomplishing these goals is a coordinated multidisciplinary team approach that addresses the potential rehabilitation needs of the individual from time of the cancer diagnosis onward.
- Standardized assessment tools should be clinically relevant and non-burdensome to the patient and the oncology clinician.
Goals and treatment plans developed jointly by the patient, support network, and rehabilitation team must be individualized to meet the individual's unique and specific needs.
Objectives:
MASCC Rehabilitation/Survivorship Study Group include:
1.Foster collaborative initiatives in oncology rehabilitation/survivorship including clinical, educational and research projects
2. Identify specific educational resources for Resource and New book sections of MASCC web site.
3. Conduct a needs assessment regarding deficits in clinician knowledge and understanding of principles of cancer rehabilitation and survivorship
4. Develop a needs assessment through diverse patient advocacy groups for select patient populations including pediatric oncology
5. Create a more detailed data base of the current members in the study group.
