Minutes from the MASCC/ISOO Business Meeting Miami Beach, Florida, USA June 26, 2004
Dr. Matti Aapro, President, called to order the MASCC/ISOO Business Meeting Saturday, June 26, 2004 in Miami Beach, FL USA in the Loews Miami Beach Hotel at 12 noon. He welcomed those attending.
There were no additions or corrections from the minutes of the last Business meeting in Berlin, June 2003.
Dr. Aapro’s report: Dr. Aapro reminded all of the reason MASCC’s exists and showed the MASCC definition of supportive care. He thanked Dr. Richard Gralla, immediate past president and announced the new officers elected by the Board of Directors: President-Elect/Vice-President: Paul Hesketh, Boston, USA; Treasurer, Ronald Feld, Toronto, Canada; Secretary, Jorn Herrstedt, Copenhagen, Denmark. Study group chairs were thanked for their work; there were no study group reports at this time but they will be put on the web. Dr. Walsh and his committees were thanked; Drs. Senn and Klastersky were acknowledged for the vision in helping start MASCC. Certificates recognizing service to MASCC were presented to outgoing board members: Andrea Bezjak, Jeffrey Crawford, Linda Elting, Judi Johnson, Stephen Schimpf, Martin Tattersall. Finally, Dr. Aapro encouraged those present to save the dates of June 30-July 2, 2005 for the next international meeting that will be in Geneva, Switzerland.
C Rittenberg then gave the Executive Director’s Report:
• Membership: Active, paid members hovers around 700 (dues expiring /30/03 or later, or scholarship):Each member receives 3 invoices. If not paid by 3 months after expiration, journal stopped. Over 50 Danish nurses joined thanks to efforts of Jorn Herrstedt.
• Elections: Completed. Nine elected. Voting on-line worked successful. Doug Peterson to give report
• Corporate Adv Board: Welcomed and thanked. Three members – Amgen (new), Endo, MGI. Meeting 6/24/04 from 11:30-1:30 in Miami
• New liasions: CancerCare, McMahon Publishing, working on data base
• Professional Liaison – developed with UICC, ISNCC
• Review and revision of by-laws and articles
• International symposia --Miami: D Walsh will report --Geneva: Debbie Kurth/Matti will report. Site secured at Crowne Plaza for June 30-July 2. Space saved for meetings the day before and after. Tatjana Romanyk hired to secure new sponsorship in Europe. Will be working .2FTE and most of her money will come from % of money raised --Toronto – Debbie Kurth/Ron Feld. Contract signed with Sheraton Centre 6/21- 6/25/06
• Web - MASCC contracted with Mango to be our new provider. Beth Hollen, managing editor, now working .35 FTE for MASCC. She has had to totally redo site. Richard Gralla new co-editor with Jorn Herrstedt.
• Programs
Strategic planning update prior to start of symposium.
Mucositis guidelines – Published in the May 1 supplement to Cancer. Money raised by the Mucositis Study Group to produce, publish, and distribute supplements.
Antiemetic Guideline meeting – Perugia March 29-31. 25 invited attendees from 9 organizations – physicians, nurses, pharmacist, and biostatististian. Slide set on web site. Articles to be published in Journal of Supportive Care and overall article in Annals of Oncology. Study group raised money to cover costs of meeting, medical writer, and any publishing costs.
• Journal: Increased to 12 issues but more articles being submitted.
• Study Groups - Chairs meeting on 6/24/04. Individual groups are meeting during this symposium. No oral reports, but written reports will be on the web soon.
ISOO: Dr. Judith Raber-Durlacher stated that ISOO remained active and enjoyed the collaboration with MASCC.
Old Business: Report of Miami Symposium: Dr. Declan Walsh greeted those at the business meeting and gave the following information:

Dr. Walsh thanked Amgen for a grant to create of CD of the proceedings of the meeting that will go to all attendees, arriving in the fall of 2004. He thanked the scientific committee, poster committee, Richard Gralla, Cindy Rittenberg, all attendees, Unitech, and Lisa Clough for their hard work. He specifically thanked Linda Elting and Dorothy Keefe for presenting the keynote address at the last minute due to an illness of the scheduled speaker, Michael Richards, whom he wished well. Finally, Dr. Walsh reminded everyone that there remained two full one-half days of scientific sessions.
New Business
Dr. Aapro announced the Young Investigator Awards. Certificates were given to those present.

Dr. Aapro announced the site of the 2007 meeting; it will be a celebration of 20 years of meetings, returning to the site of the first meeting in 1987 in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Dr. med Prof Hans-Jorg Senn and Dr. Agnes Glaus will be the co-chairs of the meeting.
Prior to adjourning the meeting at 12:30 pm, Dr. Aapro invited all to the next meeting in Geneva Switzerland, June 30-July 2, 2005.
