MASCC Study Group Chair Meeting Minutes June 30, 2005
Present: Board Members, Executive Director, Cindy Rittenberg and Chairpersons from the following Study Groups: Antiemetics, Infection, Mucositis, Oral Care, Palliative Medicine, Patient/Professional Education, Pediatrics, Psychosocial, Quality of Life, and Rehabilitation.
Absent: Chairperson from Fatigue, Growth Factors, and Hemostasis Study Groups
Introductions
Cindy Rittenberg gave each person a “conflict of interest†form to sign and return to her.
Introduced Judi Johnson as the new MASCC staff person. One of her responsibilities will be coordination of study group activities. Contact her for any questions or activities/projects you wish to conduct (judibj@mn.rr.com).
Matti Aapro, MASCC President greeted everyone and shared his view on the important role of study groups within MASCC. He asked that each chairperson develop a core group of members within their study group. In the coming year he requested that each group:
(1) identify a project to be carried out by the group members. MASCC will provide up to $1,000 USD to any group who presents a proposal for a project that is within the mission and scope of MASCC. This project could be a survey, development of a clinical assessment tool, content development for the web site, etc.
(2) each study chair communicate with their group members on a regular basis through the email. Need to contact C. Rittenberg if you need an updated list of member’s email addresses.
(3) review abstracts for the next year’s meeting
(4) update their section on the MASCC web site. Provide an updated overview statement of approximately 100 words. Select presentations from this year’s meeting that should be listed on their study group’s site.
Discussion: E.Tierman of psychosocial group requested that study chairs be given the opportunity to develop topic/speakers for session at annual meeting. The tentative program topics will be emailed to each study chair. Responses are due back by July 24th.
A, Altman, chair of the pediatric group, expressed concern for developing a project that is unique to their group. Suggested that he look for links with other study groups. For example: the mucositis study group is working jointly with the education group on implementing the new mucositis guidelines.
Linda Elting, chair of the Outcomes and Healthcare Economics submitted a letter to the BOD (and accepted) recommending that this study group be closed for immediate future. Currently the only active/interested members have been the members who represent industry. She has indicated her willingness to be available to other study groups who want to design an economic piece of a project, to develop a research resource bank for the web, etc.
