MASCC’s 2005 Distinguished Service Award Jean Klastersky

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes a MASCC member who, over their lifetime, has consistently provided outstanding contributions and leadership in the field of supportive care.
CONGRATULATIONS to Professor Jean.Klastersky who is this years recipient of MASCC’s Distinguished Service award. He is cited for this award because of his role as a global leader and innovator in the field of febrile neutropenia research and treatment. Currently Professor of Medicine, Medical Oncology and Physical Diagnosis, at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Prof Klastersky was appointed Chief, Department of Medicine, Institut Jules Bordet from 1977-March 2005. Professor Klastersky is also a Visiting Professor of Medical Oncology at Charles University in Prague. | Professor Klastersky is a founding member and the first President of MASCC. He serves as study group chair of the Infection Study Group, as Editor-in-Chief of Topics on Supportive Care in Cancer, Current Opinion in Oncology and on the editorial board of the journal of Supportive Care in Cancer. He has authored numerous published articles and scientific books. In addition to his MASCC contributions, Professor Klastersky was a founding member and President of the International EORTC Antimicrobial Therapy Project Group, Secretary General of the International EORTC Antimicrobial Therapy Project Group and President of the European Lung Cancer Working Party.
MASCC’s 2005 Outstanding Young Investigator’s Award Sultan Kav PhD RN
The recipient of the Outstanding Young Investigators Award is selected from the top ten young investigators whose abstracts are identified from among the top twenty percent submitted to the MASCC annual conference as crediable cancer supportive care research.. The criteria for being a young investigator is under the age of 40 and in practice or out of training less than two years.
CONGRATULATIONS to Sultan Kav who ranked first from among the top young investigators and was awarded this year’s prestigious Best Young Investigator Award. Her reserach was titled “Nurses attendance of patient education and follow-up for oral chemotherapy treatment in Turkeyâ€. Currently Dr. Kav holds a faculty position at Baskent University, Institute of Heath Sciences Department of Nursing in Ankara, Turkey. She has held a variety of other nursing positions during her career: staff nurse, clinical nurse, nurse supervisor, oncology nurse educator and research coordinator. She achieved her BSN, MSN and PhD degrees at Hacettepe University School of Nursing in Ankara, Turkey.
Dr. Kav has been involved in the Turkey’s National Oncology Nursing Association and served as the Secretary General of this organization from 1996 to 2002. In 2000 she was appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC) and still continues to work with the ISNCC research committee. Dr. Kav is the current President of the Turkish Oncology Nursing and recently was elected to the Board of the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS). In 2004 she received one of MASCC’s 10 Young Investigators awards. Recently Dr. Kav accepted the appointment of co-chair of MASCC’s Patient and Professional Education study group.
