The Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer Distinguished Service Award recognizes meritorious service and outstanding contribution to the society and its mission. Congratulations to this year’s award winner, Dr. Douglas Peterson of the United States.
Dr. Peterson was a Founding member of ISOO and was one of the driving forces of the MASCC/ISOO cooperation and integration. He served as Liaison between MASCC/ISOO for many years as well as numerous positions within MASCC including the Nomination Committee, Governance Committee and Professional Liaison Committee. Dr. Peterson was one the three co-chairs of the initial Mucositis Guidelines Development Project. He is an educator, researcher and leader whose efforts have touched many lives. In addition to his academic merits, he is an inspiring and excellent leader, and has a unique capacity of building bridges between individual, disciplines, and countries.

Congratulations to Dr. Wael Lasheen who received this year's young investigator's award for his research titled "Controlled Double Blind Study of Imipramine and Morphine in chronic Pain due to advanced Cancer". Currently Dr.Lasheen holds a research fellow position at The Harry R Horvitz Center for Palliative Medicine, Department of Solid Tumor Oncology, Cleveland Clinic Tausig Cancer Center. Dr Declan Walsh serves as his research supervisor. His research interest is in cancer pain and opioid use,pain classification, opioid rotation and route conversion.
Dr Lasheen is a graduate of Cairo University Medical School in Egypt, where he received his medical training before moving to the USA. Since moving to Cleveland he has held a number of research positions. His current work involves non-pain uses of opioids, use of adjuvants for pain control, cancer symptomatology and psychosocial research in palliative medicine.
