I am ready to join MASCC

"I joined MASCC in 2007 after a colleague told me about MASCC. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 35,000 new cases of cancer in Kenya every year (Kenya has a population of approximately 35 million), but only about 4,500 cases are documented. Cancer affects all ages in Kenya, but is now more common in young adults due to HIV/AIDS. Kaposi sarcoma, lymphomas, and cervical cancers are on the rise. Breast and cervical cancer are the most common cancers in women, while cancer of the prostate, head and neck, and gastrointestinal system are common in men. Until recently, there has been no cancer registry; there still is no cancer control body.
I have worked with patients with cancer for many years, primarily in providing palliative care. I realized that MASCC shares the same objectives that I have to support those suffering from cancer as they undergo treatment (whether curative or palliative) and to improve the lives of these patients and their families. Most of the attention on palliative care in Kenya has focused on people living with HIV/AIDS and little or no attention has been given to patients with cancer. That is why I am a member of MASCC."
