About the MAT
The MAT was first created and posted in 2004. It is now available in multiple languages, obtained by the standard forward/backward translation process (see translations below). Also the first iPhone/iPad application for Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy that helps their doctors in evaluating if and how much the anti-cancer treatment is causing nausea and vomiting.
Download the MAT app here. For the MAT files (word, excel, pdf) and translations, see below.

MAT iPhone/iPad App is available now in the Apple App Store.

MAT Android phone App is available now on Google Play.
The MAT is now validated, see Molassiotis A, Coventry PA, Stricker CT, Clements C, Eaby B, Velders L,Rittenberg C, Gralla RJ. Validation and psychometric assessment of a short clinical scale to measure chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting: the MASCC Antiemesis Tool. J Pain Symptom Manage. 2007 Aug; 34(2): 148-159.
The MASCC Antiemesis Tool (MAT) was developed by members of MASCC to assist patients and oncology professionals in communicating accurately about the prevention and control of nausea and vomiting that may occur with chemotherapy. The concept of the MAT is to provide an easy-to-use and easy-to-evaluate tool to assist in providing the best individual care to patients. Additionally, the tool will aid treatment centers in understanding the effectiveness of their antiemetic strategies. The MAT is patent protected and property of MASCC. Written approval of use is required. Please see below.
The group primarily responsible for the development of the tool was composed of nurses, pharmacists, and physicians. These include:
- Sussanne Borjeson, RN, PhD
- Rebecca Clark-Snow, RN, BSN
- Rebecca Finley, PharmD, MS
- Richard J. Gralla, MD
- Mark G. Kris, MD
- Cynthia N. Rittenberg, RN, MN
MASCC is grateful to Jorn Herrstedt, MD; Patricia Hollen, RN, PhD: Judi Johnson, RN, PhD; and Fausto Roila, MD, for their helpful comments and reviews.
MASCC appreciates the unrestricted grant from Merck & Co., Inc., Whitehouse Station, NJ, USA, that was used to develop the MAT.
MAT approval Non-profit entities, (physicians, nurses, etc.), are encouraged to use the MAT, and may do so free of charge. Commercial companies will require written approval from MASCC, and will incur a nominal fee prior to using this tool. Please contact the Executive Director at [email protected] for additional information regarding the approval procedure.
