Part-time Communications Manager, Medical Writer/Editor

The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) seeks a Communications Manager, Medical Writer/Editor to maintain the content of its social media, website, produce a monthly member newsletter, and serve as general editor to the organization. The person in this position will thus serve as Social/Website Editor (30%), Society News Editor (50%), and general editor for MASCC (20%). 

Job Responsibilities

The MASCC Communications Manager, Medical Writer/Editor is responsible for maintaining and developing content on the MASCC website.* Specific tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop new content, including news articles about MASCC and its affiliates, as well as research, guidelines, projects, and publications by its 16 Study Groups.
  • Maintain currency of all web pages, including but not limited to officers, leaders, committees, policies, annual meetings, guidelines, resources, and publications.
  • Maintain grammar, punctuation, and house-style consistency across the site.
  • Provide posts to share from content on our website in our social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn).
  • Provide input on web functionality.

*This position does not require HTML or programming skills. The Editor will work closely with the Website Manager, who will post content online.

The MASCC Society News Editor is responsible for producing the content of the monthly member newsletter. Newsletter articles are also published on the MASCC website and distributed through social media and other news channels. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Write all feature articles and shorter news items (e.g., new MASCC guidelines, MASCC affiliate organizations, conference previews and reviews, profiles of MASCC Study Groups, MASCC members’ honors and awards, etc.).
  • Edit other content contributed to the News for accuracy, house style, etc.
  • Keep abreast of MASCC activities in order to develop ideas for feature articles (such as reports of recent research, educational projects, and social media initiatives).
  • Provide posts to share from content in our Society News for social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn).
  • Work with Executive Director, President, and Web Manager/Graphic Designer to publish the Society News on first of each month.

The Editor must be proactive in contacting and collaborating with Study Group leaders and other personnel to solicit and develop content for both the MASCC website and the MASCC Society News.

As general Editor for MASCC, the person in this position will edit numerous MASCC-initiated documents as well as documents initiated by its affiliates and its conference organizers. Such documents can include letters, organization policies, contents of brochures, advertisements, marketing communications, and annual meeting materials (e.g., descriptions of workshops, sessions and other meeting activities).

Job Requirements

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, a command of English grammar and usage, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain consistency of style and tone across all MASCC printed material.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, research methods, and the ability to read, understand, and write about medical journal articles.
  • Ability to develop meaningful, relevant, and compelling content on an ongoing basis, in the mission to expand supportive cancer care that is meaningful to our members (oncologists, nurses, pharmacists, researchers, allied health professionals, etc.).
  • Ability to develop headliners/leader statements to draw readers to content. This includes repurposing already available content, such as journal articles, Society News articles, etc., to social media and other news venues.
  • Use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Experience in writing or editing marketing communications and/or knowledge of social media platforms (LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook) and effective social media communications.
  • Ability to travel on company business (typically one meeting a year).
  • Must be proactive and results oriented.
  • Interest in encouraging participation of members in MASCC activities and in being part of a growing organization.
  • Experience working in nonprofit organizations and an understanding of supportive care in cancer is considered a plus.

This position reports to the Executive Director (who resides in Eastern Standard Time zone) and will also work closely with the MASCC President and other officers and Study Group leaders. Benefits of the job include flexible scheduling and ability to work virtually. The hours are part-time but timely response to requests is expected in order to facilitate communications across time zones around the world.
