In Memoriam - Steven M. Grunberg, 1950-2013

Steven M. Grunberg, MD, was President of MASCC from 2012 to 2013. He was Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology, Division of Hematology/Oncology, at the University of Vermont, in Burlington, Vermont, USA. A highly respected clinician and researcher who specialized in lung and head and neck cancers, antiemetics, and investigational drug development, Steve was internationally recognized for his many contributions to the field of cancer treatment and supportive care.
Besides his contributions to MASCC, Steve was active in several other organizations, such as the American Society for Clinical Oncology, the American Association of Cancer Research, and the Northern New England Clinical Oncology Society and he participated in the National Cancer Institute’s clinical research network. He chaired several research protocol committees and participated in many clinical research studies. His colleagues remember him as a dedicated teacher, who took every opportunity to educate students, residents, and fellows in oncology and optimal treatments for people with cancer.
In honor of Steve’s life and work, MASCC awards an annual Steven M. Grunberg Memorial Award in recognition of scientific excellence, leadership, and mentoring in the field of supportive care in cancer.
