MASCC Society News January 2019

In the January 2019 issue, we bring you news of a new MASCC initiative to promote affiliated supportive care associations in the Asia-Pacific region, a summary of a recent Post-MASCC meeting in Belgium, and news of the Lancet Oncology Commission’s work toward the integration of oncology and palliative care. In Study Group news, we bring you a profile of the recently renamed Oncodermatology Study Group (formerly Skin Toxicities), a name change that reflects a broadening of the Group’s areas of interest and research.MASCC President Raj Lalla, DDS, PhD, discusses the MASCC initiative related to national-level supportive care associations. As usual, we include upcoming conference reminders. Integration of Oncology and Palliative Care

Eight MASCC members are part of an international team of authors who have recently reported on the integration of oncology and palliative care for the Lancet Oncology Commission, which aims to change the course of cancer in our lifetime.

 
Dermatologic Reactions to Novel Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors

Matthew Ebia, BA, and Jennifer Choi, MD, have recently reviewed dermatologic toxicities secondary to immune checkpoint inhibitors, summarizing the mucocutaneous adverse events associated with these agents (Curr Dermatol Rep 2018;7(4):227–238).

 
Effects of Targeted Therapies and Immunotherapies on Skin, Oral Mucosa, Hair, and Nails

Mario Lacouture, MD, and Vincent Sibaud, MD, have recently reviewed toxic side effects of targeted therapies and immunotherapies that affect the skin, oral mucosa, hair, and nails (Am J Clin Dermatol 2018;19(Suppl 1):31-39).

 
Profile: Oncodermatology Study Group

MASCC’s Oncodermatology Study Group aims to raise awareness of dermatological conditions associated with cancer and its treatments and to take a leadership role in the emerging field of cancer-related dermatological toxicities.

 
National Associations for Supportive Care in Cancer

MASCC recently convened an international meeting in Singapore to better understand supportive care needs and to explore options for creating supportive care societies in the Asia-Pacific region.

 
MASCC Society News December 2018

In the December 2018 issue,  we bring you news of several recent meetings that have included a focus on supportive cancer care. MASCC President Raj Lalla, DDS, PhD, discusses MASCC Study Groups, our new Study Group policy, and a new award to recognize outstanding Study Groups and their leaders. We include a Letter from Christopher Steer, MBBS, FRACP, about the goals of the geriatric oncology community and the legacy of Arti Hurria, MD, a leader in the field who died tragically in early November. Ourania Nicolatou-Galitis, DDS, DrDent, has provided a research update based on papers presented at the recent International Symposium on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws. We extend a warm welcome to all the new members who joined us in October. And we encourage every member to be a voice for MASCC!

 
Research Update on MRONJ
The development of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) was highlighted as a growing epidemic at the recent International Symposium on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws in Copenhagen. For the benefit our MASCC members, Ourania Nicolatou-Galitis, DDS, DrDent, Chair of the Bone & Musculoskeletal Study Group, provides an update based on papers presented at the meeting and recent publications. She discusses the definition and staging of MRONJ, as well as prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, best practice, and education.
