In January, MASCC and the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) formalized their close relationship in a Memorandum of Understanding. SIOG, a multidisciplinary society that includes physicians and other health professionals with an interest in geriatric oncology, aims to optimize treatment of older adults with cancer.

 
New MASCC Study Group Coordinator Leslie Johnson

Leslie Johnson, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is MASCC’s new Study Group Coordinator and Manager of Sponsor Relationships, replacing Don Gubitosa, who has resigned. Leslie assumes her new positions effective December 18, 2017.

 
2017 MASCC DSA David Warr

David Warr, MD, FRCPC, is the recipient of MASCC’s 2017 Distinguished Service Award. The DSA, MASCC’s highest honor, is made in recognition of meritorious achievement and outstanding contributions to the Society. Candidates are nominated by their peers in recognition of exemplary leadership and accomplishments in support of the Society’s mission.

 
New MASCC Executive Director Melissa Chin

Melissa Chin of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, will assume the office of Executive Director of MASCC on March 28, 2017. Most recently employed as Manager of Corporate Planning for a large healthcare network, Melissa brings varied experience in healthcare strategy, operations, and project management.

 
New Oral Care Education Materials
Members of the International Society of Oral Oncology (ISOO) and MASCC’s Oral Care Study Group have created four multilingual Fact Sheets and an Oral and Nutritional Care Education Video Storyboard that provide instructions for patients undergoing chemotherapy or head-and-neck radiation therapy.
 
2016 MASCC/ESMO Antiemetics Guideline Update Available

The new MASCC/ESMO Guideline appears in a supplement to the September 2016 issue of Annals of Oncology* and is available for free download.

 
Psychosocial Subgroup Cross-Cultural Issues

The Psychosocial Study Group has announced the formation of a new Subgroup, which will focus on cross-cultural issues in cancer supportive care. Study Group members Sandra Michiels and Patrick Crombez will head this new initiative.

 
Tamura Appointed Board Directors

MASCC President Ian Olver is pleased to announce the appointment of Kazuo Tamura, MD, to MASCC’s Board of Directors. Kazuo Tamura is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology, Hematology and Infectious Diseases, at Fukuoka University Hospital in Fukuoka, Japan, where he was Hospital Director from 2013 to 2015.

 
Mucositis Management Information Sheets

The Mucositis Study Group has created a patient-friendly version of the clinical practice guidelines for the management of oral mucositis associated with different types of cancer treatment. 2016 MASCC DSA Matti Aapro

Matti Aapro, MD, was selected as the recipient of MASCC’s 2016 Distinguished Service Award. The Award recognizes meritorious achievement and outstanding contributions to the Society and its mission. Candidates are nominated by their peers in recognition of exemplary leadership and accomplishments in support of the Society’s mission. Currently Dean of the Multidisciplinary Oncology Institute, Genolier, Switzerland, Matti Aapro is widely recognized for his achievements in numerous areas of oncology and supportive cancer care. His expertise and energetic leadership have significantly furthered the aims of MASCC around the world.
