Deborah Walker Honored by AACN

MASCC member Deborah K. Walker, DNP, was awarded a 2015 Award in Excellence and Innovation in Teaching from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing for a project-based learning activity designed to increase nursing students’ awareness of cancer patients’ psychosocial needs  a project that helps bridge the gap between theory and practice. Deborah was subsequently awarded funding to lead a project team in the development of a Cancer Resource application. The application is now being used in Alabama (US) and Deborah hopes to expand its use in many other communities.

Cancer Resources App

The Cancer Resources App, developed by a project team led by MASCC member Deborah K. Walker, identifies local and national resources for cancer patients and caregivers, provides a summary of resources with contact information and maps, and includes an option to email selected resources. New Antiemetic Guidelines

The MASCC/ESMO Antiemetic Guidelines have been updated as of March, 2016. The guidelines are based on the Copenhagen Consensus Conference on Antiemetic Therapy, June 2015, and have been endorsed by both MASCC and ESMO. This set of evidence-based guidelines represents several important changes and first-time inclusions.

FDA Approves Single-Dose Fosaprepitant

In February, 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration approved a single-use injection of fosaprepitant dimeglumine (Emend®) to prevent delayed nausea and vomiting in adults receiving an initial or repeat course of moderately emetogenic chemotherapy.

AgeCare - Improving the Care of Older Cancer Patients
AgeCare®, an Elite Research Center based in the Department of Oncology, Odense University Hospital, Odense, Denmark, is directed by Jørn Herrstedt, MD, DMSc. The center aims to optimize cancer therapy and supportive care for older cancer patients through a wide range of research projects.
American College Surgeons Cancer Program Standards
The Commission on Cancer (CoC) has released the 2016 edition of Cancer Program Standards: Ensuring Patient-Centered Care, which encompasses the requirements that cancer programs must meet to earn and maintain CoC accreditation.
Inaugural Guildford Supportive Care in Cancer Course
The Inaugural Guildford Supportive Care in Cancer Course was held November 4-5, 2015, in London with over 200 attending. Organized by Andrew Davies, the Course focusesd on oral problems, such as infections and mucositis.

MASCC joined SIOG in a joint session at the Annual Meeting of the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (Société Internationale d’Oncologie Gériatrique, SIOG), November 12-14, 2015, in Prague, Czech Republic.
Sandra Mitchell Inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing
MASCC member Sandra Mitchell, PhD, CRNP, AOCN, was one of nine members of the Oncology Nursing Society who were inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing in October, 2015. The induction took place at the Academy’s annual policy conference in Washington DC.
MASCC Members Honored Conquer Cancer Foundation
MASCC members Marie Flannery and Gordana Popovic were among 15 oncologists honored by the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO for their high-quality research contributions in the field of palliative care. The recipients of the Merit Awards in Palliative Care were announced at the 2015 Palliative Care in Oncology Symposium in October.
