Dr. Judi Johnson Honored for Outstanding Achievement

Long-time MASCC member Judith (Judi) Johnson, PhD, RN, FAAN, was awarded the University of Minnesota’s 2018 Outstanding Achievement Award for her long career as a tireless champion of patient education and its importance to successful cancer chemotherapy.

Profile: Bone & Musculoskeletal Study Group

MASCC’s Bone & Musculoskeletal Study Group (BMSG) is a natural evolution of the former Bone Study Group led by Chair, Dr. Ourania Nicolatou-Galitis and Vice-Chairs, Dr. Beatrice Edwards and Dr. Winston Tan. The BMSG aims to advance understanding of bone and musculoskeletal health in cancer patients. The group will conduct research and develop guidelines for the prevention and treatment of skeletal complications associated with cancer and its treatments.

In the September 2018 issue, MASCC President Raj Lalla talks about the importance of partnerships to achieving MASCC’s mission.    Meet MariaLuisa Vigano, the youngest investigator to present research at the MASCC Annual Meeting, and Paulina Ackley Akpan IdioK, winner of this year’s Cynthia N. Rittenberg Travel Scholarship. We’ve included an updated list of Study Group leaders, since there have been several recent changes. It’s not too early to start thinking about our next Annual Meeting. We have information and tools to help, and Meeting Chair Andrew Davies invites everyone to MASCC/ISOO 2019. We extend a warm welcome to all the new members who joined us in July. And we encourage every member to be a voice for MASCC!

Paulina Ackley Akpan-IdioK, PhD, of Nigeria was awarded MASCC’s 2018 Cynthia N. Rittenberg Travel Scholarship for her research on the influence of supportive care intervention on the caregiving burden.

Meet Our Youngest Investigator, MariaLuisa Vigano

Seventeen-year-old MariaLuisa Vigano, the youngest investigator to have presented research at a MASCC Annual Meeting, delivered a paper on cannabis-based treatments for improving appetite in cancer patients and others with nonmalignant chronic diseases in June 2018.
