Zhang Appointed Board Directors
MASCC President David Warr, MD, is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Li Zhang, MD, of Sun Yat-Sen University Center in Guangzhou, China to MASCC’s Board of Directors. Warr, who has visited China several times and met with prominent Chinese oncologists states that none are more influential in the area of supportive care as Dr. Zhang, who is recognized as a leader in research and a mentor to junior faculty.
Christine Miaskowski Inducted into International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame
MASCC member Christine Miaskowski, PhD, RN, FAAN, was one of 19 nurse researchers inducted this year into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). The ceremony took place on July 25th at STTI’s 26th International Nursing Research Congress in Puerto Rico.
Alex Chan Receives 2015 Steven M. Grunberg Memorial Award
Alexandre Chan is Associate Professor and Assistant Head, Department of Pharmacy at the of the National University, Singapore. He also holds the title of Specialist Pharmacist in Oncology Pharmacy at the National Cancer Centre Singapore.
Nicolatou-Galitis Elected President of ISOO

At the 2015 MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting in Copenhagen, Ourania Nicolatou-Galitis, DDS, MSc, DrDent, of Greece, became the new ISOO President, succeeding Richard Logan of Australia. 


Romiplostim for the Management of Chemotherapy-Induced Thrombocytopenia • Chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (CIT) can interfere with the optimal course of chemotherapy by necessitating schedule delays and dosage reductions. Some patients experience more severe or persistent thrombocytopenia than others, and their responses are neither well understood nor predictable. Both the prevention and management of CIT are critical in order for patients to benefit fully from chemotherapy.

2015 MASCC/ISOO Meeting A Great Success

Jørn Herrstedt Awarded MASCC’s Distinguished Service Award

Jørn Herrstedt, MD, DMSci, was the recipient of MASCC’s Distinguished Service Award for 2015. The Award recognizes meritorious achievement and outstanding contributions to the Society and its mission. Candidates are nominated by their peers in recognition of exemplary leadership and accomplishments in supporting the Society’s mission.

Lidia Schapira, MD, FASCO, has been named the new Editor-in-Chief of Cancer.Net, the award-winning patient information website of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Cancer.Net helps patients, families, and caregivers make informed healthcare decisions by providing timely, comprehensive, and peer-reviewed information.

Netupitant Palonosetron

FDA and EU Commission Approval for Netupitant/Palonosetron (Akynzeo) - In May, 2015, the EU Commission also approved Akynzeo for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. The decision, based on the opinion issued by the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), applies to all 28 European Union member countries, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

Palliative Care in Oncology Symposium

Dorothy Keefe, MD, MBBS, FRACP, FRCP, spoke at the opening session and also delivered a Keynote Address, at the Palliative Care in Oncology Symposium. The symposium, cosponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), and MASCC, was held in Boston, Massachusetts, October 24-25, 2014. Dr. Keefe is Director South Australian Cancer Centre, Professor of Cancer Medicine at University of Adelaide, and immediate Past President of MASCC. She served on both the Planning Committee and the Steering Committee for this year’s Palliative Care Symposium.
