Clinical and Translational Cancer Control Research Training Program

The NCI-Supported Clinical Research Training in Cancer Control Program at the University of Rochester provides post-doctoral MD or PhD researchers with knowledge and experience to establish careers as outstanding independent investigators in cancer control and prevention research. The program includes the following components:

  • An emphasis on successful grant techniques to prepare researchers to compete successfully for research funding
  • Courses, seminars, and workshops on cancer control and research methods in patient-oriented research, biostatistics and informatics, and health outcomes
  • Choice of earning an MPH degree or MS with a focus on clinical investigation, medical statistics, or translational research
  • Professional guidance from experts in cancer control and prevention
  • A diversity of research opportunities with on-site mentors
  • Practical experience in protocol design, study procedures, statistical analysis, grant and manuscript writing, and oral presentation

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Oral Medicine Laboratory

Job Summary

The postdoctoral Research Fellow is responsible for conducting biomedical research in the areas of microbiomic and human genomics in the Oral Medicine Research Laboratory. The individual undertakes research studies in areas defined by the Lab Director or designee. Responsibilities will include all aspects of research, including protocol and experimental design, study implementation in the laboratory, data analysis and interpretation, grant writing, abstract and manuscript preparation, and presentation at meetings. All work will be conducted with minimum of direct supervision as defined by the director of the laboratory.
Essential Functions

  • Develop, design, and implement basic science and clinical translational research projects related to areas of focus. Work directly with the laboratory principal investigators regarding selection of research objectives and procedures. The research will be performed in conjunction with other internal and external collaborators.
  • Organize work according to priority of the experimental studies and assessment of the time necessary to complete procedures. Keep careful and accurate records.
  • Generate data necessary for creation of abstracts, papers, presentations, and applications for extra- and intramural funding. Present summaries of results at meetings of the lab group and elsewhere.
  • Prepare applications for external funding and help to prepare grant proposals.
  • Be responsible for manuscript, poster, and seminar preparation, under guidance of laboratory principal investigators. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of all laboratory information and experimental results. 
  • Assist lab director in training laboratory technicians, students, residents, etc. as needed.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to all regulations of inspecting bodies regarding occupational health and safety (OSHA).
  • Perform minor troubleshooting on equipment and procedures.
  • Provide support of scientific research, publications, presentations, and teaching activities, as requested by the laboratory principal investigators or designee.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Education, Training, and Experience

Ph.D. with appropriate research experience during prior graduate education needed in genetics, molecular and cellular biology/microbiology. Demonstrated knowledge in contemporary biomedical research approaches. Knowledge/experience in biostatistics/bioinformatics would be a plus (e.g., analysis of genomic or microbiome DNA or RNA sequence data using tools such as PERMANOVA, DEseq2, logistic regression models, bayesian network models, molecular network visualization via R-packages or other software packages). The ability to develop novel research projects and implement them into laboratory is essential. Excellence in oral and written communication skills is required. Demonstrated prior experience in preparation of abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts is desirable. Prior experience in writing/reviewing of grant applications is preferred. Organizational, time management, and planning capabilities needed. Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, energetic, and to work effectively in a team environment.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

National University of Singapore

A full-time, two-year postdoctoral research fellowship position in the group of Alexandre Chan is available in the Department of Pharmacy at the National University of Singapore (NUS).
The fellow will join a recently funded multidisciplinary research program of cancer supportive care and toxicities management, with a focus on chemotherapy-associated fatigue and cognitive impairment. The focus of this fellowship is to develop the candidate’s ability to conduct clinical research in cancer supportive care. Research responsibilities include development of research protocols, grant writing, data collection in clinical areas, biostatistics, manuscript preparation and submission. Fellows will also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students. Didactic lecturing opportunities are available, depending on the fellow’s career interest.
Candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree (PhD, PharmD, MD, or MBBS) in pharmacy, nursing, medicine, public health, or other health-related disciplines
  • Previous intensive research experience in the clinical setting, and a good track record of own research
  • Ability to conduct statistical analysis using statistical software including SPSS, SAS, STATA or R
  • A meticulous worker with the ability to work independently
