From the Editor

This month, we are pleased to introduce Angela Perez, MASCC’s new Communications Director, who will serve as Website Editor and Editor of the MASCC Society News, among other duties. Again, I’d like to thank everyone at MASCC for the opportunity to be part of an organization I greatly admire and respect. I am continually impressed by the growing global presence of MASCC and by the commitment of its staff, leaders, and members. It’s been a privilege and a pleasure in more ways than I can say! In the future, feel free to contact me at [email protected].

In this issue, MASCC President Dr. Rajesh Lalla discusses the upcoming MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting in Seville. As usual, we include several conference reminders and deadlines. Please note the DSA Nominations Deadline of April 1. We extend a warm welcome to new members who joined us in December. And we encourage every member to be a voice for MASCC!

Message from the President,
Rajesh Lalla, DDS, PhD

Dear Colleagues,

It’s about time to begin making your plans for the upcoming MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting in Seville, Spain, June 25-27, 2020. Hopefully, you have already submitted your abstract but if not, you will have another opportunity during the late-breaking abstract submission period, which opens February 7 and closes March 26. Registration for the meeting is now open. Save by registering before March 10! Meeting Chair Andrew Davies, MD, and the organizing committee have put together an outstanding scientific program. We will start on Thursday morning with four cutting-edge pre-meeting workshops. These will be followed by two and a half days of stimulating presentations and discussions covering various aspects of supportive care in cancer. And we will have plenty of opportunities for networking, socializing, and making new friends — including the Welcome Reception and President’s Dinner. Don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Seville, the location of our 2020 Annual Meeting, is one of the top tourist destinations in Spain. It is full of historic charm and home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites. Seville is also famous for its flamenco clubs and Andalusian food and drink. Seville is well connected to the rest of Spain, offering numerous possibilities for a Spanish holiday before or after the conference. For example, just a two-hour train ride away is the city of Malaga, gateway to the world-famous Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun), with many spectacular locations for a beach vacation on the Mediterranean.

All in all, this promises to be one of the best MASCC/ISOO meetings yet, in a magical location that you will not want to miss.

P.S. MASCC will be observing World Cancer Day with a very special offer for MASCC members. Watch your inbox for an email from MASCC around February 4!

Introducing Angela Perez, MASCC’s New Communications Manager

MASCC is pleased to introduce its new Communications Manager, who succeeds Toni Clark as Website and Society News Editor. Angela joined MASCC on January 2 and will assume full responsibility for the Society News starting with the March issue. In addition to the News and website editing, Angela will assist with developing and executing communication plans for MASCC, which will include content on our website and social media outlets, and numerous other writing and editing projects.

Angela brings to MASCC over 10 years of experience in communications, publishing, and government relations in a variety of industries including cybersecurity, non-profit electric utilities, energy, and hospitals. She holds a master’s degree in Liberal Studies from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, with a concentration in Russian, Slavic, and East European studies.

“I live to write, edit, and scuba dive, in that order,” says Angela, an avid diver who recently completed PADI Advanced Open Water certification while in the Florida Keys. She plans to attain Rescue Diver certification in 2020. Angela volunteers at a regional sea turtle hospital and also teaches English language to local refugee and immigrant communities. Having lived in both Oregon and Washington, DC, Angela returned to her home state of North Carolina, where she currently resides with her dog, Tater. Tater frequently travels with Angela on her dive trips but does not share her affinity for the ocean.

XXI Congresso Brasileiro de Oncologia Clinica
A Report on the 21st Brazilian Congress of Clinical Oncology

The Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology (Sociedade Brasileira de Oncologia Clínica, SBOC) hosted the 21st Brazilian Congress of Clinical Oncology (Congresso Brasileiro de Oncologia Clinica) on October 23-26, 2019 in Rio de Janeiro in partnership with the Brazilian Society of Oncological Surgery and the Brazilian Society of Radiotherapy. The focus of the 2019 Congress was multidisciplinarity, a key element in the success of any cancer treatment and one that increases favorable patient outcomes — in terms of both health and quality of life. The event included dozens of speakers representing numerous specialties. Presentations addressed major advances in the systemic treatment of each tumor type, with modules led by renowned experts. Among the many sessions was a joint session with MASCC, chaired by MASCC President Rajesh Lalla, DDS, PhD, and MASCC member Nivaldo Farias Vieria, MD, PhD (Brazil).

Dr. Lalla delivered two presentations at the meeting: “A Contemporary Approach to the Oral Side Effects of Radiation Therapy,” and, in the SBOC/MASCC joint session, “MASCC/ISOO Guidelines for Mucositis Management.” MASCC Executive Director Melissa Chin, HBSc, MBA, CHE, also spoke at the Congress on “Supportive Care in Oncology Worldwide: The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer Perspective.” Read more.

Report: 3rd International Symposium on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (MRONJ) — November, 2019

The 3rd International Symposium on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (MRONJ) was held on November 14-15, 2019 in Copenhagen, Denmark and was attended primarily by dentists and oral surgeons with an interest in MRONJ. Chaired by Morten Schiødt, DDS, Dr.Odont (Denmark), the Symposium featured a faculty of 13 widely recognized European experts in MRONJ, who provided updates on recent research in the areas of classification, clinical manifestations, imaging, treatment, and prevention. The speakers included MASCC and ISOO members Bente Brokstad Herlofson, DDS, PhD (Norway) and Ourania Nicolatou-Galitis, DDS, MSc, DrDent (Greece). Dr. Herlofson presented an update on the Scandinavian ONJ Cohort Study, an 8-year research collaboration on osteonecrosis of the jaw in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Dr. Nicolatou-Galitis discussed the histopathological, radiological, and clinical evidence regarding the role of periodontal and dental disease in MRONJ.

The 4th International Symposium will be held in 2020 in Germany. Read more.

World Cancer Day is February 4

World Cancer Day is a global observance that helps raise people’s awareness of cancer and how to prevent, detect, and treat it. This event is held each year on February 4 — a time when people, businesses, governments, and nonprofit organizations work together to help the general public learn more about the different types of cancer, as well as prevention, treatment, and support. The 2019-2021 campaign theme, “I Am and I Will,” stresses empowerment and personal commitment and is intended to inspire change and mobilize action long after the official day has passed. This is also a good time to help spread the word about the importance of supportive cancer care — for people living with cancer, for cancer survivors, for caregivers and for loved ones.

Working Group on MASCC App

MASCC is considering the development of an app to allow healthcare professionals to quickly search for guidelines and expert opinions on managing the symptoms and side effects of cancer and its treatments. We would like to put together a MASCC Working Group to explore the possibility of developing such an app and provide input on desirable features. The objective is an easily searchable resource that can be used in the clinic or at the bedside to access current management practices in supportive oncology at the point of care. If you are interested, contact Melissa Chin.
