Message from the President,
Andrew Davies, MB BS, MSc, MD, FRCP

But Mouse, you are not alone,

In proving foresight may be vain:

The best-laid schemes of mice and men

Go often askew,

And leave us nothing but grief and pain,

For promised joy!

The above verse is from the English translation of the poem by Robert Burns entitled “To a Mouse, on Turning Her Up in Her Nest With the Plough” (written in 1785), and encapsulates the tragedy of the Covid-19 pandemic: an unexpected, distressing, destructive occurrence with ongoing consequences for all those affected.

Covid-19 has had an impact on all of us (both personally and professionally). Equally, Covid-19 has had a negative impact on MASCC. Postponement of the annual meeting was unavoidable but has resulted in a significant increase in workload for the staff and officers, and a not insignificant “dent” in MASCC’s finances. MASCC will continue to thrive during these challenging times.

However, Covid-19 has had an even bigger impact on our patients and their families. New patients have experienced delayed diagnoses and/or delayed treatments, and other patients have experienced disrupted or modified treatments (including access to supportive care services). Indeed, some patients will have gone from “curable” to “treatable,” and others from “treatable” to only suitable for palliation. Moreover, many patients are experiencing increased physical, psychological and social problems as a result of their cancer and/or the pandemic.

In other words, supportive care services have never been more important to our patients, and we need to continue to promote ourselves locally, nationally and internationally. On that note, in the past year, MASCC has joined ECCO (the European Cancer Organisation), which is advising the European Commission / Parliament on their “Beating Cancer Plan.” As a result, we can ensure that supportive care (MASCC definition) is integral to the Plan, and that access to related services is available throughout the European Union (i.e., 447 million people).

Despite taking over as President, I will continue as the Chair of the Annual Meeting (Seville, 2021). By next summer, I hope that Covid-19 will only be a distant memory (and a topic for abstracts), and that we can all meet up again at the Annual Meeting in Spain for great research, unmatched company, unforgettable entertainment (especially the President’s Dinner), a great destination, fantastic food, wonderful wine, and (as someone from the United Kingdom) sunny weather!

As mentioned above, there will be a plenary session next year on Covid-19 and its consequences. We will be seeking additional related abstracts for oral presentations and ePosters. Abstract submission and registration for next year’s meeting will re-open in the autumn. Please encourage colleagues and students to attend the annual meeting,

Finally, I would like to congratulate Raj Lalla on his very successful presidency (“tough act to follow”), and sincerely thank those Officers and Board Members who have completed their terms of office: Ian Olver, Rachel Gibson, Alex Chan, Mellar Davis, Joel Epstein, Jørn Herrstedt, Mario Lacouture, Charles Loprinzi, Kazuo Tamura, and Declan Walsh. I also want to welcome our new Officers and Board Members.

- Andrew

Supportive Cancer Care and Covid-19: A Career Transition During a Worldwide Crisis

The health care profession has experienced major impacts from Covid-19.   As the pandemic continues, MASCC will share our members’ professional experiences with our community.  If you are interested and able to share your professional experiences, advice and advancements during this time of international crisis, we will find a convenient time in your schedule for a brief 30-minute interview. Please contact Angela Perez today at [email protected].

This month, we discuss with MASCC Board Member Florian Scotté, MD, PhD, what it was like to make a major career transition during the time of Covid-19.
______________________

In December of 2019, Dr. Florian Scotté was offered the opportunity to head up and develop a new interdisciplinary cancer care department at the Paris-based Gustave Roussy Cancer Care Center, one of the most renowned cancer care centers in the world. At the time, Scotté was head of medical oncology at Foch Hospital in Suresnes, just a few short miles from the Paris city center. Although Foch is one of Europe’s largest and most celebrated teaching hospitals, Scotté could not pass up the chance to lead a major project advancing patient-centered cancer care. He accepted the role and began making plans to transition to Gustave Roussy.

The planned start date for his new job? March 9, 2020. Little did he know that would be just a few days before French President Emmanuel Macron announced on public television that France was going on lockdown until further notice.

PARTICIPATE IN OUR SURVEY! Practitioners’ Views on Patient-Reported Outcomes

MASCC’s Survivorship Study Group invites healthcare professionals involved in the care of cancer patients to share their experiences and perceptions regarding patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in a 10-minute online survey. The Study Group is investigating oncology practitioners' current strategies and experiences in applying PROs in clinical practice, performance measurement, and research. The aims are (1) to explore practitioners’ experiences and perceptions on the use of PROs in routine clinical care at the patient level and (2) to assess the value of PROs as a performance or quality-of-care indicator at the system level. This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Boards of Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Edith Cowan University, Western Australia.
If you are interested in participating, please follow this link for more information and the online survey by July 31, 2020: Patient-Reported Outcomes (PRO) Data Collection in Routine Care: An International Survey of Oncology Practitioners.
