MASCC Society News - June Issue

June 2018

From the Editor

With this month's issue of the Society News, we have a new format and delivery method. From now on, you will receive the News via email. Let us know how you like it!

In this issue, we introduce our newly elected Board of Directors for the two-year term from 2018 to 2020, and President Ian Olver reflects on his past two years as MASCC President. We report on the recent meeting of the Danish Society for Clinical Oncology. We also include some highlights of Vienna for those who have time to explore the city before or after the Annual Meeting. As usual, we note several conference and webinar dates and deadlines. We extend a warm welcome to new members who joined us in April. And we encourage every member to be a voice for MASCC!

All issues of the MASCC Society News are available online at Older issues (through August, 2016) can be found in the back pages of our journal, Supportive Care in Cancer.

President's Message - Ian Olver

Ian Olver

As I write my final report, I want to start by saying that it has been a privilege to serve MASCC as President. As I reported in March, it has been two years of significant change for our society. It has been satisfying to see MASCC continue to grow, with over 50 new members joining in April, which takes our membership well past the 1,000 mark. It is members' contributions that give MASCC its strength. I've been especially gratified to see many new members, particularly from Japan, to complement our traditional membership bases in the US and Europe.

The number of abstracts submitted for the Vienna meeting ensures that we will have a vibrant scientific program, and the early registrations are strong.

Many people have given a great deal of time to MASCC and have been of tremendous support to me over the last couple of years. I cannot single out all of them, but I want to note what a pleasure it has been to work with Melissa Chin. It's great to have such a competent and engaging person as our Executive Officer. I thank all of the MASCC staff members, who serve us so well. I've valued my monthly engagement with Toni, as she keeps the society up to date with current news.

I also thank the Board of Directors. Because of the strategic planning process last year, Board members were asked to be more involved than in a routine year, and as a result, we have new well-defined goals, which we have prioritized and started to act upon this year. The Executive Committee has met by teleconference monthly and deals with the numerous issues that a multifaceted, international organization must navigate. I am grateful to Raj Lalla, Alex Chan, Dave Warr, and Rachel Gibson for their willingness to meet the demands of their roles. Rachel, with Kat Nehme's support, has led the organization of the Washington and Vienna conferences and delivers programs of high scientific quality, as well as taking creative approaches to making the Presidential Dinner so enjoyable.

I am particularly pleased with the continued growth of our journal, Supportive Care in Cancer, under Editor Fred Ashbury's leadership. It is the journal of first choice for many of our supportive care researchers and clinicians who want their work read by those most engaged in the field.

I look forward to continuing to support MASCC and Raj as incoming President with my next two years on the Board. Also, Raj has asked me to chair the Nominating Committee, which is a suitable role for a Past President, and I will continue to serve on the Publications Committee. My other project, given that the second edition of the MASCC Textbook is likely to be published in October, will be to look at updating the history of MASCC as we approach our 30th year.

I hope to see you all in Vienna!

Danish Society for Clinical Oncology Meeting 2018

DSKO 2018The Danish Society for Clinical Oncology (Dansk Selskab for Klinisk Onkologi, DSKO) held its Annual Meeting April 12 to 14, 2018 in Nyborg, Denmark. The meeting featured a Supportive Care session chaired by Jørn Herrstedt, who provided an introduction to supportive cancer care and a session summary. Among the speakers, MASCC's Dorothy Keefe addressed the topic of integrating supportive care in routine practice, arguing that supportive care is central to cancer care and, in fact, makes excellent cancer care possible. In a second presentation, Dorothy discussed the side effects of targeted therapy. Every new class of drugs brings new toxicities and understanding the toxicity mechanisms of targeted treatments is vital to the prevention and treatment of side effects. Other session topics included geriatric oncology, cardiotoxicity, cancer and thrombosis, malnutrition in cancer patients, and cannabinoids. MASCC had a booth at the meeting, and Executive Director Melissa Chin was on hand to greet attendees.
