From the Editor

This month we continue sharing exciting details and news about the upcoming MASCC/ISOO Annual Meeting in Seville, Spain in June. I especially want to note that researchers can still submit for oral presentations at the conference – the Late-Breaking Abstract Submission Period deadline is March 26.  MASCC President Rajesh Lalla, DDS, PhD, discusses the growth in MASCC membership and our exciting new membership incentive programs. Also, remember the DSA nominations deadline is April 1. We extend a warm welcome to new members who joined us in January. We’ve also included several conference reminders and deadlines.

All recent issues of the MASCC Society News are available online at Older issues (before 2013) can be found in the back pages of our journal, Supportive Care in Cancer.

Message from the President,
Rajesh Lalla, DDS, PhD

Dear Colleagues,

Increasing awareness about MASCC and MASCC membership is critical to achieving our mission to promote supportive care in cancer. The affiliate model we launched last year and the six national-level affiliates signed up so far have started to show an effect as our membership has increased from around 1000 members at the beginning of 2019 to 1388 members currently. Since members of some of our affiliates have yet to be added (based on their time of annual renewal), we can expect a further increase in membership numbers thanks to our affiliates. We are also working to sign up additional national-level affiliate organizations.

In parallel, we are also pursuing strategies to incentivize individual memberships. One of these is the MASCC Buddy Program, whereby you can introduce your colleagues to MASCC membership at no cost! This is perfect for your colleagues at all levels that may benefit from MASCC membership and allows them to try it risk-free. I sincerely request each of you to think of at least one colleague who has not been a MASCC member in the last three years and invite them to join MASCC as your Buddy. This program only runs through June 5, 2020. Please email [email protected] for additional information on the MASCC Buddy Program.

Another membership incentive program, announced in this issue, is our Year of the Nurse Membership Discount Program. Nurses are often at the forefront of supportive care in cancer. In order to honor the valuable contributions of our nursing colleagues, we are offering a membership discount in 2020 to both current and new MASCC members who are nurses. Through this program, MASCC celebrates the WHO designation of 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse and Midwife.” This program runs through December 31, 2020. All nurses are eligible; introduction through an existing MASCC member is not required for this program.

Under the able leadership of MASCC Board Member Annie Young, BSc, SRN, PhD, the MASCC Membership Committee has been active and engaged in promoting MASCC membership objectives, including working on the above membership incentive programs. Other members of the MASCC Membership Committee are: Thomas Butler, MD; Alex Chan, PharmD, MPH, FCCP, BCPS, BCOP; Melissa Chin, MASCC Executive Director, HBSc, MBA, CHE; Rajesh Lalla, DDS, PhD; Sandip Mukhopadhyay, MD, NFPM, MBBS; Micah Peters, PhD; Cristhiam M. Rojas-Hernandez, MD; and Corina van den Hurk, PhD. I would like to acknowledge and thank my colleagues on the MASCC Membership Committee for all their efforts.

Your Vote. Your Voice. Your Association:
Cast your Vote in MASCC Board of Directors Elections
Deadline: March 12, 2020

As a MASCC member, you have an important voice in choosing the association’s leadership. Be sure to vote this year and make your voice heard!  MASCC is guided by a member-elected Board of Directors that represents you when making decisions. Being a member of the Board is an important and highly responsible position and directors devote considerable time to MASCC’s role in expanding supportive cancer care globally. If you have not received an email from MASCC with information and instructions on this year’s voting ballot, please email Beth Hollen.  The deadline to vote is March 12, 2020.  The 2020-2022 Board will be announced in the April Society News.

Year of the Nurse — MASCC Offers 50% Discount for Nurse Memberships

MASCC is offering a 50% discount on membership dues to all nurses, both renewing members and nurses who become new members in 2020. This year-long program honors the World Health Organization’s (WHO) designation of 2020 as “Year of the Nurse and Midwife” in honor of Florence Nightingale, born 200 years ago and considered the founder of modern nursing. Current MASCC members are also encouraged to invite their colleagues, students, and trainees to join them as MASCC members. Read more.

Working Group on MASCC App

MASCC is considering the development of an app to allow healthcare professionals to quickly search for guidelines and expert opinions on managing the symptoms and side effects of cancer and its treatments. We would like to put together a MASCC Working Group to explore the possibility of developing such an app and provide input on desirable features. The objective is an easily searchable resource that can be used in the clinic or at the bedside to access current management practices in supportive oncology at the point of care. If you are interested, contact Melissa Chin.

MASCC celebrates our 30th anniversary in 2020

This year MASCC celebrates our 30th anniversary at the President’s Dinner held during the annual meeting in Seville, Spain.  We will look back on 30 years of innovative research and education on supportive cancer care.  The dinner will be celebrated in true Sevillian style at the exquisite Villa Luisa in a magnificent glass pavilion, offering breath-taking views of gardens, historic fountains and pergolas. We look forward to continuing to engage our members as we continue to build on MASCC’s strong foundation over the next 30 years! For more information on the President’s Dinner, click here.
