From the Editor

This month, MASCC President Raj Lalla talks about the importance of partnerships to achieving MASCC’s mission. Meet MariaLuisa Vigano, the youngest investigator to present research at the MASCC Annual Meeting, and Paulina Ackley Akpan IdioK, winner of this year’s Cynthia N. Rittenberg Travel Scholarship. We’ve included an updated list of Study Group leaders, since there have been several recent changes. It’s not too early to start thinking about our next Annual Meeting. We have information and tools to help, and Meeting Chair Andrew Davies invites everyone to MASCC/ISOO 2019. We extend a warm welcome to all the new members who joined us in July. And we encourage every member to be a voice for MASCC!

All issues of the MASCC Society News are available online at http://www.mascc.org/society-news. Older issues (through August, 2016) can be found in the back pages of our journal, Supportive Care in Cancer.

Message from the President,
Raj Lalla

Raj Lalla

Dear Colleagues,

For those of you in the northern hemisphere, I hope you have had a rejuvenating summer and a chance to spend some quality time with family and friends.

In this message, I want to talk about the importance of partnerships to achieving MASCC’s mission of promoting supportive care in cancer. A major focus of our efforts will be to strengthen existing partnerships and establish new ones. In addition to our special relationship with ISOO, MASCC already has MOUs with a few partner organizations. These MOUs promote mutual support and collaboration and include having a presence at one another’s meetings. I’d like to further develop these relationships. We are also pursuing membership agreements with national-level supportive care organizations, similar to those we have with the Italian Network of Supportive Care in Oncology (NICSO) and the Danish Society for Clinical Oncology (DSKO). Our agreement with NICSO was developed with the work of MASCC members Paolo Bossi, Carla Ripamonti, Fausto Roila, and others, while that with DSKO has come about with the efforts of Jørn Herrstedt and Dorothy Keefe. We are looking into expanding this model so that we can partner with other existing national-level groups and help establish new groups where none exist. My long-term vision is of MASCC as the umbrella, international-level, organization with national organizations across the world as partners or affiliates. This could significantly grow our community and increase awareness about supportive care in cancer globally.

Clearly, this will not happen overnight but we are taking some initial steps. More to come on this in the next issue.

Best Wishes, Raj

Meet Our Youngest Investigator, MariaLuisa Vigano

MariaLuisa Vigano

At the 2018 Annual Meeting’s Parallel Session on Cannabinoids for Symptom Management, MariaLuisa Vigano delivered a paper on cannabis-based treatments for improving appetite in cancer patients and others with nonmalignant chronic diseases. MariaLuisa is the 17-year-old daughter of MASCC member Antonio Vigano, who encouraged her to submit an abstract to MASCC's Annual Meeting. MariaLuisa told us: “I picked the topic of medical cannabis because over the past three years, I have witnessed, through my father's work, the revolution it is creating in the field of medicine around the world and particularly in Canada. The results of her study support the administration of cannabis-based medicines for improved appetite and weight maintenance in patients with anorexia due to cancer or nonmalignant chronic diseases.  read more
